Level 1: Build a foundation and set ambitions

G-Star has a detailed strategy to improve the environmental impact of its suppliers and focuses on reducing suppliers’ impacts through implementing the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemical (ZDHC) policies, adopting Bluesign and participating in cleaner production programmes such as the Bangladesh Partnership for Cleaner Textiles (PaCT). G-Star considers its wet processing units as its most impactful suppliers and has developed an ‘Environmental Guideline’ to set out its expectations for all suppliers to manage their water, energy and chemical footprints. This year, G-Star postponed its supplier wastewater testing, until after the new ZDHC wastewater treatment guidelines were released, leading to a slight drop in score compared to last year. Overall G-Star’s broad foundation is reflected in a level 1 score of 97%.

Level 2: Make steady progress

G-Star has clear targets from 2014-2020, this includes a target to achieve zero discharge of hazardous chemicals by 2020. G-Star maintains a supplier onboarding and ranking system which assesses a suppliers’ environmental engagement before becoming a G-Star supplier. Beyond setting policies, G-Star conducts site audits, assessing topics such whether a supplier has an Environmental Management System through to if a supplier has an Effluent Treatment plant with adequate capacity. Resulting in a score of 87% at level 2.

Level 3: Adopt best practice

G-Star continues to support its suppliers to meet environmental thresholds through capacity building programmes such as PaCT. The brand has policies in place, such as its Manufacturing Restricted Substance List (MRSL), which sets limits for potentially hazardous chemicals within production. G-Star is also a member of the Zero Discharge of Hazardous Chemical (ZDHC) group, and G-Star’s CR Director is an acting board member. This year G-Star encouraged more of its suppliers to adopt Bluesign requirements, however there is opportunity to roll this out across its entire supply base, to collaborate with suppliers on right first time dyeing and identify ways to prioritise its suppliers with best environmental performance, resulting in a level 3 score of 49%.
